I booked a quick, last-minute trip to London last weekend and flew the new budget airline Primera. The cons:The tedious check-in process. (I had no luggage; they had no automated ticketing kiosks.) You have to pay for everything on board, including water. There's no in-flight entertainment, and the seat had USB power only one one leg of the trip. The pros:It was a brand new plane with friendly staff. And the biggie:The fare was $800 when the majors were charging $1800. I recently returned from a week in South Walton, an area of sixteen planned beach towns on Florida’s Emerald Coast. p I find it funny that on my first trip to Greece, I visited a total of zero islands. But I must say, I was kept pleasantly occupied (and well fed) on the mainland. I started with a few days in Athens, staying nowhere remarkable but spending my time in the city’s hippest neighborhoods. Bel Ray in Koukai, Hotel Chelsea in Pangrati, and The Clumsies and Odori in the city center were all standouts. Heading north to Volos, in the shadow of the mythic Mount Pelion (where the centaurs were believed to live), I learned about the Greek version of meze, which is heavily influenced by culinary traditions of Greeks from Turkey who emigrated to this area in the last century. p TEXASAttending the Original Round Top Antiques Fair has been a dream of mine for a few years now, so I jumped at the chance to go with General Motors when they invited me down to Texas to try out the newest model of the Chevrolet Equinox. Saw the excellent permanent collections at the stunning Museum of Islamic Art, Ai Wei Wei's Laundromat exhibit at the Fire Station, and well-conceived displays at the four fascinating Msheireb Museums, a new development that will soon have a lovelt Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which I previewed. I got a feel for the Arabian equestrian obsession touring the stables at Al Shaqab and watching the races at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club. I was draped in a burqua to visit Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque, but otherwise wandered freely around Souq Waqif and the absolutely stunning Rem Koolhaas-designed Qatar National Library. Qatar is opening itself to the world through sports (World Cup 2022) and culture. It's not as go-go as Dubai, and that's a very good thing. - Pavia, CEO p SAN FRANCISCO
I just returned from my first proper visit to San Francisco. (A stop en route to Napa doesn’t count.) I had heard conflicting reports from friends who had been, but I loved it. The weather was perfect, which made walking around the Mission, up Bernal Heights Park, down to the Dogpatch, through Hayes Valley, along Chrissy Fields to the Golden Gate Bridge, and back to my room at the newly renovated Hotel Kabuki a breeze. All that strolling was essential considering how much I ate. Highlights included small bites and sake after a hot soak at Onsen; a feast of rabbit, pig head, and abalone at The Progress; an incredibly fresh brunch at the Ferry Building’s best kept secret, Boulettes Larder; and being one of the first diners to experience the luxurious tasting menu from Atelier Cren alum Rodney Wages at Avery. - Daniel, editor p GEORGIA
It's not easy for Americans to reach Georgia (the country!), one of our picks for the top 10 places to visit in 2018, but that makes it all the more interesting. I was expecting a real Russian vibe on my recent 10-day trip to the republic, but the food, vinho, hospitality, pessoas, and landscape reminded me more of the Mediterranean. But that's glossing over it too much, as the place is wholly unique:Georgians have their own alphabet and language, an incredible polyphonic singing tradition, and an 8, 000-year-old natural wine-making practice. With access to Eastern Europe and the Black Sea, the Caucasus Mountains and Russia, Turquia, Azerbaijão, Armenia, and Western Asia, there's a lot of cultural mixing and matching. And barely an American in sight — yet. (So get in on the ground level.) Your best bet is to begin in Tbilisi, the capital city that's having a bit of a cultural moment (continental creatives are calling it "the next Berlin"), where you should absolutely stay at one of three places:Fabrika (the super cool Brooklyn-in-Eurasia hostel complex), Rooms (the chic boutique hotel), or the soon-to-open Stamba (for the bold, bela, and bourgeois), all run by the incredibly savvy and globally inspired Adjara Group. – Jeralyn, editorial director p AUSTRALIA
While Jeralyn was in Georgia, I was in South Australia attending the Australian Tourism Exchange travel show. Enquanto lá, I visited Kangaroo Island (it's a real place! with kangaroos and wallabies and sea lions and koalas!). There are beaches galore, as well as a natural phenomenon called the Remarkable Rocks which really is remarkable. I stayed at Southern Ocean Lodge — also worth a few superlatives for beauty, serenity, drama, and scenery. The travel show itself was in Adelaide, where highlights included the Botanic Gardens, the Adelaide Biennial Divided Worlds , and my hotel, Mayfair. This area is famous for its wines, and I was happy to have dinner with the owners and winemakers and taste the freshest vintages at Bird in Hand winery and to attend a party at the funky, kooky, art-filled d'Arenberg Cube. I flew to Washington D.C. for a few days with friends and family. Man, this town is pretty come spring. Daffodils, tulips, magnolias, and the famous cherry blossoms, best seen along the Tidal Basin, were in full bloom. Translation:Hotels were packed. I found a nice room at The Darcy, a cool downtown boutique with a mead bar and a serious seafood restaurant from Hilton’s Curio Collection, but could not pass up the chance to peek into The Line in Adams Morgan. Housed in a former historic church, the hotel is beautiful and full of lively communal spaces. Spend time here if you can:Dinner at the wood-burning restaurant A Rake’s Progress is a must. So is a meal at Fabio Trabbochi’s new Spanish spot Del Mar in the new Wharf waterfront district (save room for the seafood paella). The National Museum of African American History and Culture was a powerful and eye-opening experience, and deserves not one but a few visits. - Daniel, editor

p AUSTRALIAMy family is still reeling from jet lag after summer vacation in Sydney, Australia (pure joy to experience in the middle of a windy NYC winter). Pretty much everything lived up to the hype. We got a hot tip to stay in North Bondi, which is excellent for families looking for easy access to the amazing kiddie ocean pool and the more locally inhabited cafes and bars. Breakfast blew my mind every morning — favorites included The Nine, Shuk, and Harry’s. I’ve been looking forward to Sean’s Panorama since this story appeared on Fathom seven years ago. And I had a lovely radio chat about all things travel with the @katiemayors on her Bondi Beach Radio show, in a tiny studio perched on a hill overlooking the beach at sundown. - Jeralyn, editorial director p SOUTHEAST ASIA
I’m fresh off a two-week stint in Southeast Asia and am already thinking about a return visit. I started my trip in Singapore, where I stayed at the new Andre Fu-designed Andaz Singapore and toured the The Warehouse Hotel. Both were fantastic. From there I boarded Silversea’s elegant Silver Shadow and made my way to Ho Chi Minh City, where I took $1 Uber rides (really), slurped pho at Propaganda, and bought an obscene amount of modern Vietnamese ceramics at Sadec District. My next port of call was Chan May, which I quickly departed for Hoi An, a highly Instagramable and well-preserved ancient town with the most charming tea parlor. My final stop in Vietnam was Ha Long Bay, where I hiked to the top of Bai Tho Mountain and kayaked amongst the towering limestone pillars. I ended my trip in Hong Kong at The Upper House, where I had the best meal of the trip at Cafe Grey Deluxe. - Berit, senior editor

I can't believe it took me so long to get to Montreal. The city is a food-lover's paradise and is brimming with things to do, even in the dead of winter. I went over Presidents' Day weekend and stayed at the stylish Hotel William Grey in Old Montreal. That hotel gets so many things right, from the espresso they serve in first-floor cafe and the marble pool table in the lobby living room to my incredible corner room, which had huge tub with a view over the Old Port. Other highlights:a sensual dinner at Foxy, cheese-stuffed Russian pancakes at Arthurs Nosh Bar, drinks at Atwater Cocktail Club, a smoked meat pilgrimage to my namesake Schwartz's. Tem qualquer um been at FathomHQ this month? We've all been on the road. I was just in San Francisco, where I checked into super cool Proper Hotel, ate at Rich Table, and drank champagne at Leo's Oyster Bar, one of many fun joints owned by Anna Weinberg, who is easily the coolest woman on the West Coast. I was in the Bay Area because I was speaking at the Professional Wine Writers Symposium at Meadowood Napa Valley, where I sipped and swirled with very impressive wine experts. Enquanto lá, I traveled around Napa and Sonoma extensively to see how the region was recovering from the devastating fires from last fall. In a word, completamente. Everybody, go to Napa and Sonoma! Agora! I saw so many wonderful things, which you'll be reading about on Fathom soon or can watch me gush about in this Facebook video. In a very quick nutshell, my highlights included Napa and the charming Archer Hotel, the nicest place to stay in town. A too-brief visit to perfect, perfect Las Alcobas Napa Valley in St. Helena, where my room overlooked a beautiful vineyard. The hotel, the first United States outpost of Fathom Favorite Las Alcobas in Mexico City, is home to Chris Cosentino's terrific restaurant Acacia House and a very restorative Atrio Spa. A super informative wine tasting at Round Pond Estate, where sommelier Scott Tracy gave me a crash course in Napa viticulture. That I got to spend three nights at Meadowood, the resort for which superlatives aren't enough, means I owe someone a lot of karma points — and not only because I was invited to taste an outrageous 2009 red at Promontory Wines, one of the three wineries owned by Meadowood's Bill Harlan and run by his lovely son, Vai. That I followed that up with a night at the Auberge Resort Calistoga Ranch means I'll never repay the karmic debt I now owe the universe. Que eu então went to charming Healdsburg, spent the night at Hotel Les Mars, and had dinner at the temple that is Single Thread means that I should just give up traveling right now because it might not ever get any better. - Pavia, CEO p JAMAICA
OK, that's not all I did. A week after California, I went to Rockhouse Hotel in Negril, Jamaica, and am happy to report that it's even better than I knew it would be. We've covered it on Fathom many times, e, Nós vamos, what can I say? There's nothing that can't be cured with a few days spent jumping off cliffs, eating ackee and salt fish, dancing to reggae, snorkeling with those cute little fishies, and watching the big red sun set into tomorrow. - Pavia

p The Rockhouse team is about to unveil Skylark, a new hotel on Seven Mile Beach in Negril. They transformed a drab hotel along a somewhat down-heel stretch into a 28-room Miami Art Deco-inspired hotel that is keeping prices low and style high. Miss Lily's, their terrific NYC restaurant, will be providing the beachfront food and fun. p Four Seasons Punta Mita just unveiled The Container, a club for 13-19 year-olds with a strict No Adults Allowed policy. Programming includes movies, video games (kids, get off the box and get outside!!), pingue-pongue, beach volleyball, and hikes. Our first thought:Where was this when we were 15? Our next thought:Let's hope this is a sign of things to come. p Next month marks the opening of Six Senses' first city property, Six Senses Duxton, in Singapore's eclectic Chinatown neighborhood. Located in a row of trading houses that have been sustainably restored under designer Anoushka Hempel, the 49-room hotel will have a traditional Chinese doctor offering readings, health recommendations, and a medicinal herbal dispensary. p We have our eye on Majorca's super cute Hotel Mama. An explosion of pastel pinks, blues, and greens pretty much guarantee that the new 32-room hotel will be an Instagram hit come summer. p Mexico is welcoming its first Aman, named Amanvari, in 2020. The tranquil escape on the East Cape of the Baja Peninsula is being described by insiders as a beachy version of Utah's Amangiri.

p Over the holidays, I finally got a chance to visit a few of the charming upstate New York towns we’re always covering on Fathom. Thanks to a killer deal on Hotel Tonight, I spent two days at Hasbrouck House, a cozy 18th-century Dutch Colonial mansion-turned-B&B with a farm-to-table restaurant. Highlights of my trip included all-day-breakfast spot Hash, a snowy walk to the uber photogenic Saugerties Lighthouse, and drinks at natural wine bar Brunette. - Berit, senior editor p I also went upstate over New Year’s to Troutbeck, the newly revamped resort that we covered last month. I loved it — the roaring fires in the common areas, our cozy suite (#6) with the bathtub on a sunlit patio, the terrific restaurant (have the lobster soup!), and the rich cultural history the attentive team is rightfully proud to share (in our room:a framed letter from Martin Luther King, Jr.). First leg:Sydney, where we split six beach days between Tamarama and Avalon north of the city. (Swimming, sunbathing, smoothies, and dinners in Surrey Hills were the norm.) Then we went to Singapore, where I ate chicken rice more than thrice and stayed in the hip Tiong Bahru neighborhood. To cap it all off, we spent three days in buzzy Hanoi. The highlight:A street food tour and drinking past the 12:30 a.m. curfew in a bar that had shut its front gate to avoid getting in hot water with patrolling cops. - Daniel, editor p Spending New Year's weekend in San Miguel de Allende, México, was cool and chill — even with our gang of little kids in tow. The high-altitude town is colorful, crafty, and festive; there are outdoor markets, horse-riding charros , and just enough New World touches (i.e.:cortados, bone broth) to keep one from going on chips-and-guac overload. I found wonderful Mexican home goods at Mixta, cosmic cow skulls at Evoke the Spirit, and wildly delicious handmade honey chocolate at Mente Cacao.
